Amid the sturdy buildings and cobblestone streets, inside the grand mansion of Landlord Jonas McAllister, preparations were underway for a momentous occasion. The landlord was on the cusp of a significant promotion - to the esteemed rank of Baron. The news had spread like wildfire, and Duke Mark Oldenwright himself was set to grace the event with his presence, journeying from the capital of Silverdale for the occasion.

    In honor of his impending elevation, Jonas had extended his generous invitations far and wide, summoning his closest companions to join him in celebration. The mansion that was located among the clustered dwellings of Royal Oak, stood as a beacon of festivity amidst the town's humble abodes. Within its walls, the main room had been transformed into a scene of lavish indulgence, with tables laden with an array of delicacies and libations, tended to by diligent servants. Tables groaned under the weight of sumptuous fare, while servants flitted about, their graceful movements a testament to their dedication.

Suspicion gnawed at his thoughts, prompting him to seek out Rufus, yet the elusive figure remained elusive, melting into the shadows of the mansion. Circulating through the room with purposeful strides, he scanned the faces of the guests, his keen eyes searching for any sign of the elusive figure.

    Approaching the servants discreetly, Rosamund inquired about Rufus's whereabouts. "Excuse me," he began, "have you seen Rufus around? It's imperative that I speak with him."

    "Ah, Brother Hemlock! Caerbannog!" Rollo exclaimed, clapping a hand on Caerbannog's shoulder. "Join us in toasting Jonas's imminent ascension to the rank of Baron!"

    Tim, his cheeks flushed with drink, added with a hearty laugh, "Indeed! Let us raise our glasses high and cheer for our friend's success!"

    As the jovial banter continued, Landlord Rick Foster approached, his expression stern and unwavering.

    "I trust you're all enjoying the festivities," he remarked, his tone laced with a hint of skepticism.

    Brother Hemlock, ever diplomatic, replied with a respectful nod. "Indeed, my lord. It's a pleasure to witness such a joyous occasion."


    Jonas' Taster moved to the banquet tables and took some of the food, tasting it: "Mmm, exquisite."

    Suddenly, the taster feels dizzy like the room is spinning around him

    Taster: "Aargh!"

    He collapses to the ground

    Jonas McAllister's voice faltered mid-sentence, his expression twisting into one of shock and concern. "What... what is the meaning of this?" he exclaimed, his gaze darting frantically around the room.

    Brother Hemlock sprang into action, his gift as a healer taking over as he rushed to the fallen servant's side. Kneeling beside him, he quickly assessed the man's condition, his heart sinking at the sight of the telltale signs of poisoning.

    Amidst the revelry, the evening took a dark turn as Jonas's taster fell victim to poisoning, sending shockwaves through the gathering. As the taster collapsed, a hushed gasp rippled through the room, shattering the air of celebration. Panic seized the guests, and chaos threatened to descend upon the banquet hall.

    "What's happened?" one guest exclaimed, their tone laced with disbelief.

    "I heard he took just one sip, and then... this," another whispered, their words barely audible over the commotion.

    One guest hesitatingly said: "Is he alright? Someone, call for help!"

    Other guest: "Quickly, get a healer! He's been poisoned!"

    Brother Hemlock: "Stand back, everyone! Give him room to breathe!"

    Brother Hemlock can't help feeling a somewhat familiar situation. He himself, once consuming a deadly hemlock plant by mistake, once teetered on the brink of death until the benevolent intervention of the lady of the forest and guardian of life Mielikki, spared his life. This divine intervention led him down a new path as a cleric. Because of this he more intensely and furiously did his best to see if he could find any remedy.

    Councillor: "Wine! Check the wine! It might be tainted."

    Rosamund, his voice cutting through the din, called out commands with authority. "Clear the area! We need space for the healers to work," he directed, his tone firm yet reassuring.


    In a brazen display of treachery, a band of assailants, cloaked in brown robes, emerged from the kitchen, launching a daring assault upon the noble host.

    In a blaze of steel and sorcery, Rosamund and his stalwart companions, Crunk, Jet, Caerbannog, and Brother Hemlock, rallied to defend their friend against the onslaught. The clash of arms reverberated through the halls as the party waged a desperate battle against their would-be assassins.

    Brother Hemlock pulled a surprised and shocked Jonas behind him: "By the grace of Mielikki! Jonas, take cover!"

    With steel in hand and spells on their lips, Rosamund and his companions rallied to defend their friend against the onslaught.

    In the ensuing melee, Rosamund, alongside his trusted allies, waged a fierce battle against the intruders. Caerbannog's mystical prowess and Jet's agility proved invaluable, while Crunk's nimbleness and Brother Hemlock's healing arts turned the tide of battle.

    Rosamund, his sword gleaming in the dim light, steps forward to meet the first assailant head-on. With a mighty swing, he clashes swords with his opponent, the clash of steel ringing out like a bell in the air. "You dare threaten Lord Jonas under his own roof? You'll pay dearly for your treachery!" Rosamund's voice carries a fierce determination as he parries blow after blow, his movements fluid and precise.

    "You think you can stop us? You're nothing but pests to be squashed!" one of the assailants snarls, his voice dripping with contempt as he lunges forward with his sword.

    With a swift and decisive strike, Rosamund Pike dispatched one of the guards who dared to threaten Lord Jonas. As the foe fell, Rosamund's attention turned to the mages, their sinister presence a harbinger of danger.

    Jet, her agile form darting between foes, engages with two attackers at once, her daggers flashing in the flickering light of the torches. "Come on, you cowards! Is this the best you've got?" she taunts, her voice laced with a hint of amusement as she deftly dodges their strikes and retaliates with quick, calculated strikes of her own.

    Crunk, his sword swinging through the air with devastating force, bellows a fierce battle cry as he charges into the fray, his every strike sending foes tumbling to the ground. "No one threatens Lord Jonas and lives to tell the tale!" he shouted as he maneuvered through their enemies with unmatched ferocity.

    Also the guards of the different nobles attacked the assailants as well, defending their masters fiercely with their swords and axes.

    The red-robed mages chant incantations, causing Crunk to temporary lose balance, their voices rising above the chaos of combat. "Your feeble defense is no match for our power!" they sneer, unleashing bolts of arcane energy at Caerbannog, who narrowly dodges out of harm's way.

    One priest in long red robes wearing a brown cloak tried to touch Caerbannog, chanting an unknown incantation, but the bunny dodged out of the way.

    Crunk avoided some blows and said back in defiance. "Is that all you've got? I've faced tougher foes than you in my sleep!"

    Rosamund fought with valor, his sword flashing in the dim light of the banquet hall as he pressed the attack against the mages. Caerbannog's relentless assault bolstered his own, driving the enemy back with a relentless tide of fury.

    Then suddenly, Caerbannog unleashed a primal fury, his usually benign form contorting into something altogether more fearsome. With teeth bared and eyes blazing, the rabbit warlock surged forward, heedless of the chaos erupting around him.

    The sight of Caerbannog's transformation struck terror into the hearts of the guards, their resolve faltering in the face of such unearthly ferocity. They stumbled backward, their composure shattered by the unexpected onslaught.

    Amidst the chaos, the other guests recoiled in horror at the sight of the monstrous rabbit-warlock, their cries of alarm mingling with the clash of steel and the crackle of arcane energy.

    Together, Rosamund and Caerbannog became a force to be reckoned with, their combined strength striking fear into the hearts of those who dared to threaten their lord and comrades.

    Crunk: "Stay back, you scoundrels! Jonas, get to safety!"

    Amidst the chaos, the blond barmaid suddenly attempted to hold a noble hostage, which caught the party off guard.

    With a fierce glint in her eye, the barmaid pressed the dagger against the noble's throat, her grip firm and unyielding as she issued her demands.

    "Drop your weapons! And back off, all of you!" she snarled, her voice dripping with venom as she tightened her hold on her trembling captive.

    In a shaky voice, the noble, sweat beading on his brow, issued a command to heed her words. "Do...do as she says," he pleaded, his voice trembling with fear as he urged for compliance.

    With lightning reflexes, Crunk swiftly closed the distance, his movements fluid as he aimed his weapon at her hand. The sharp crack of his shot pierced the air, the bullet grazing her hand and causing her to wince in pain as the dagger clattered to the ground. In an instant, he stood between her and the noble, a stalwart shield against further harm.

    "What in blazes do you think you're doing?" Crunk thundered, his voice booming over the din as he moved swiftly to intercept her, his massive frame imposing as he stepped between her and her intended victim.

    "Let him go, lass," he commanded, his tone firm and unwavering as he extended a hand toward the frightened noble, ready to shield him from any further harm.

    With a sharp intake of breath, the maid recoiled, her injured hand cradled against her chest as she stumbled backward, the fire in her eyes dimming momentarily in the face of Crunk's resolute stance


    The party, together with the different elite guards of the nobles, attacked the assailants from all sides. They were now wounded and thrown backwards way past the banquet table. Soon the battle was over. The assailands had to surrender.


    With the assailants vanquished, Jonas collapsed in his chair, being worned out and shaking with nervousness from the unexpectedd event. He turned to his allies, entreating them to uncover the truth behind the attack. United in purpose, Rosamund and his companions vowed to stand against further threats, their resolve unshakable in the face of adversity.

    Jonas said in a shocked and exhausted voice: "By the gods, this was terrible, just terrible."

    After pausing for a while, he added, "My friends, we must uncover the identity of those who seek to harm me. Together, we shall root out this treachery and restore peace to Royal Oak."

    With a sense of urgency, Rosamund turned to his companions, his determination evident in his steely gaze. "I suspect it was Rufus! We cannot allow him and his master to escape unpunished," he declared, his voice resolute. "Jonas's safety is paramount, and we must uncover the truth behind this cowardly attack."

Some of the people that you hired proved to be very untrustworthy!"

    Dougle, his face set in determination, stepped forward to lead the group. "We will not rest until we have uncovered the truth and brought those responsible to justice," he affirmed, his voice unwavering as he prepared to embark on their quest.

    With their resolve hardened and their purpose clear, the party set forth, their unity forged in the face of adversity. Bound by loyalty and duty, they ventured into the unknown, determined to unravel the mystery surrounding the attack on Jonas McAllister and bring the perpetrators to justice.


    As chaos threatened to engulf the room, Jonas turned to Pierro, the seasoned entertainer known for his ability to lighten even the heaviest of atmospheres. "Pierro, we need your talents to quell the rising tension," he implored, his voice urgent yet tinged with a hint of desperation. "Please, do whatever you can to calm the distraught guests."

    Pierro, a lively man with wide, curly orange hair and a red nose, nodded solemnly in response to Jonas's plea. "I'll do my best, my lord," he assured, his voice carrying a note of reassurance as he prepared to fulfill his role in diffusing the mounting tension. Caerbannog wasted no time in leaping into one of the stalls, followed closely by Brother Hemlock. Meanwhile, Jet and Crunk set about inspecting the others, their eyes scanning the dimly lit interiors for any sign of their elusive quarry.

    As Caerbannog surveyed his surroundings, he noticed something peculiar—the toilets seemed to be interconnected, with a hole near the ceiling providing a passage between them. Without hesitation, he made his move, vaulting effortlessly from one stall to the next with the grace of a seasoned acrobat.

    From his vantage point, Caerbannog could see the others below, their faces contorted in confusion as they watched his agile movements. Rosamund's voice rang out above the commotion, his tone laced with bewilderment.

    Rosamund: Come on, Bon, we need to inspect the toilet. It could hold valuable clues about the assailants.

    Rosamund: responding back: yes, since we are not sure if he is innocent or not, we'll just have to endure it for now.

    As they inquired around the hallway, Dada, a butler, nervously shifted from foot to foot as Rosamund and Dougle approached him. His eyes darted around, searching for an escape route, but there was none.

    "Have you seen Ado Untermire?" Rosamund's voice was firm, his grip on Dada tightening with each passing moment.

    Dada hesitated, beads of sweat forming on his brow. "Y-yes, he went upstairs," he stammered, his voice barely above a whisper.

    Rosamund grabbed Data firmly, pulling the protesting Dada along with Bon. With the rest of the party trailing behind, they made their way down the hallway, their footsteps echoing ominously in the silence.

    Councillor: nervously "Hi sirs, lady. I'm just a council member who has come to visit Lord Jonas. I hid when hearing so much commotion down the hallway. Can I please go now?"

    Rosamund's resounding "NO" echoed through the room, leaving no room for negotiation. He interrupted him, voice firm "Silence, and follow. Your innocence or guilt will be determined soon enough."

    Cornelius: "Please, good sirs and madam, spare me this ordeal. I assure you, I mean no harm. Ten gold pieces, and I'll vanish from your sight."

    When Cornelius offered gold in exchange for his release, Rosamund's patience wore thin. With a firm grip on both Councillor and Dada, the party pressed on down the hallway, determined to unravel the mysteries lurking within the mansion.

    Rosamund: with a steely gaze "Your gold means nothing in the face of treachery. We seek answers, not bribes. Now come along, both of you. There's more to uncover here, and I won't be delayed by your schemes."


    The party walked down a long hallway with many opened window shutters on one side.

    Crunk: "Oi, Jet, take a look at the house across! What d'ya make of them green skins over there?"

    Jet: peering out the window "Hmm, looks like orcs. But what are they doing with those humans in cloaks?"

    Crunk: "Can't be up to any good, I reckon. Look at 'em, armed to the teeth!"

    Dougle: furrowing his brow "This ain't right. Orcs might be tolerated, but not when they're sneaking around armed like that. Could they be planning something against my father's house?"

    Jet: "Could be. Should we do something about it?"

    Dougle: "We'll need to keep an eye on 'em. Let's inform the others and figure out a plan."

    Cornelius: "I really must attend to matters with Lord Jonas McAllister. Can you pleaaase release me now?"

    Rosamund said irritated: "Fine, be on your way. But remember..., we'll be watching."

    Cornelius: nods hastily "Thank you, thank you!"

    Cornelius quickly scurries away, disappearing down the hallway.


    As the party traversed the dimly lit hallway, they reached a door where a middle-aged man emerged, looking disoriented and under the influence of some drug. His movements were sluggish, and his gaze unfocused. He greeted them with a half-hearted attempt at a smile, clearly struggling to maintain his balance.

    The room itself was dimly lit, with a single flickering candle casting long shadows across the walls. The air was heavy with the scent of incense, adding to the disorienting atmosphere.

    Man: dizzy and drugged "I... I don't know what's happened. I feel strange..."

    Dougle: "What's wrong? Did something happen?"

    The man's speech was slurred, and he seemed to be in a state of confusion. He gestured towards a nearby chair where he had left his cloak, only to find it missing, replaced by a different one of a striking blue hue.

    Man: "My cloak... It's gone. And... there's a different one here."

    Rosamund whispered to himself, 'aaah, he has been with us the whole time!'

    Dougle examined the cloak and recognized it immediately.

    Dougle: "That's Ado Untermire's cloak!"

    Rosamund's frustration was palpable as he realized the gravity of the situation.

    Jet, ever the agile rogue, seized the opportunity to climb the imposing iron fence encircling the stone warehouse, her nimble form disappearing into the shadows with practiced ease. Meanwhile, the rest of the party approached the weathered door, where a burly guardian stood sentinel, his watchful gaze piercing the darkness.

    Meanwhile, Crunk attempted to follow suit, but his efforts were fraught with difficulty, narrowly avoiding injury from the sharp iron spears crowning the fence.

    The remaining members of the party approached the door of the stone warehouse and rapped on it firmly. A rugged, muscular man, clad in coarse fur and bearing an axe on his back, swung the door open and scrutinized them intently.

    Guardian: "What's your business?" he grunted, eyeing them warily.

    In response, the party declared their intent to conduct business and presented their intriguing wares. Satisfied, the man gruffly ushered them inside, allowing the group to enter the warehouse.

    Crunk: "Reminds me of my uncle's cellar, only with less rats."

    Jet: "The place is very damp. Let's see what is here."

    Their attention was drawn to the corner where two orcs engaged in hushed conversation. Pluck's gravelly voice reverberated in the air, carrying their words across the room.

    Pluck: "I'd give me left tusk for a taste of that stuff, but it's off-limits to the likes of us."

"We just spoke to Siegfried the guard captain and seek your guidance and assistance in unraveling this mystery, that we may put an end to the suffering of our townsfolk."

    He paused for a moment, allowing the weight of his words to sink in before continuing. "As you know, every week we lose another member of our community to these senseless murders," he explained, his tone laced with frustration. "Despite our best efforts, we have been unable to apprehend the perpetrators. Earlier on, we sent out two, no three different groups that investigated these murders. Even our most skilled guards and adventurers have vanished without a trace!"

    Dougle: And what about the thieves guild, can they be involved in the murders?

    Mayor Rothan Blackshield: "I personally doubt it. You see, the presence of the Thieves Guild in our town serves a peculiar purpose. Bruno, the leader, ensures that no nefarious elements disrupt the peace and safety of Royal Oak, such as unaware thieves from outside robbing our townsfolk. However, recent developments have led me to suspect that they may be involved in more than just petty theft."

    Rosamund: "Opium smuggling..., perhaps?"

    Mayor Rothan Blackshield sighed: "Precisely. It seems their interests extend beyond simple thievery. We must tread carefully in our investigations."

    As the party was walking back from the Towns hall, Rosamund and Dougle find it strange that the thieves guild ensure safety in this town of royal oak.

    Rosamund: "It's quite odd, isn't it? A thieves guild ensuring safety?"

    Dougle: "Indeed. One would expect them to be causing trouble, not preventing it."

    Crunk: "Appearances can be deceiving. Sometimes, those with less-than-honorable professions find it beneficial to maintain order, at least on the surface."

    Rosamund: "Let's see. Rothan seems to suspect they're involved in more than just keeping the peace"



    Chapter 3, the Royal Oak Murders - 27.03.2024


    As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the town square, Dougle McAllister's frustration boiled over when thinking about everything that happened so shortly ago. As the group gathered in the bustling town square, Dougle's irritation simmered palpably in the air, his words carrying the weight of recent events. "Enough is enough," he declared, his voice ringing out amidst the crowd. "We can't sit idly by while these murderers run rampant through our town."

    Caerbannog couldn't resist a wry comment, his tone laced with sarcasm as he quipped, "Ah yes, truly the epitome of stealth and subtlety. Shouting our plans for an 'undercover mission' to the entire town square. I'm sure the murderers are shaking in their boots."

    His words drew a few chuckles from the group, a brief moment of levity amidst the tension. Yet, underlying the jest was a reminder of the importance of discretion and caution in their endeavors, a lesson not lost on the rabbit warlock.

    Meanwhile, Brother Hemlock emerged from the zoo, his brow furrowed with concern as he relayed rumors of a mysterious dinosaur being relocated to the local menagerie.


    Amidst the chaos and intrigue of Royal Oak, a shadowy figure emerged from the darkness, his movements swift and precise. This was Jean Val Jean, a drow warrior whose skills in stealth and combat were whispered about in hushed tones. With a sly grin, he approached the party, his eyes gleaming with a hint of mischief. Recognizing a shared purpose, he offered his services, eager to lend his expertise to their cause. And thus, another enigmatic ally joined the ranks, ready to navigate the treacherous paths that lay ahead.

    Also walking along with him, a figure with a rugged appearance and a fierce glint in his eye. His name was Zodd, a seasoned warrior whose prowess on the battlefield was matched only by his unwavering determination. With a nod of acknowledgment, he joined the party, his presence adding a formidable edge to their ranks.

    Zodd: "Hello there people, The name's Zodd, barbarian by trade, and I don't much care for fancy introductions. I overheard your loud talkings from afar and I am interested in helping you with your mission on capturing these murderers! Can we join your merry band?"

    Jean Val Jean: "And I'm Jean Val Jean, a drow warrior. Pleased to make your acquaintance. Looks like we'll be getting into some interesting trouble together."

    Dougle, Brother Hemlock and Caerbannog eyed the newcomers suspiciously and talked with them some more. Soon they had the feeling that the help of such people would be really welcome.

    Dougle: "Alright then, Zodd, Jean Val Jean. It is good to have more muscle on our side, but let's not get too comfortable. Things tend to get hairy around here."

    Caerbannog: nods in agreement "Indeed. The path ahead may be fraught with danger. We must remain vigilant."

    Brother Hemlock: "Greetings, Zodd, Jean Val Jean. While I welcome your assistance, let us not forget the shadows that lurk in every corner. Trust is earned, not freely given in these lands. Of course you will have to prove yourselves."


    With having this said, Rosamund Pike and Crunk decided to leave the party, not wanting to partake anymore. They had other things on their mind. Dougle and Brother Hemlock tried to persuade them to stay, but they had already made up their minds.


    But there were more that responded to Dougle's call,

    As Mortel approached the group, her steps deliberate yet determined, she cleared her throat to announce her presence. "I couldn't help but overhear your conversation," she began, her voice steady despite the underlying sadness in her tone. "My name is Mortel, and I've come seeking justice for my son."

    The party turned to face her, their expressions a mix of surprise and curiosity. Mortel's presence commanded attention, her demeanor reflecting both strength and vulnerability in equal measure.

    "I may not look like it at first hand," she continued, her gaze sweeping over each member of the group, "but I assure you, I've seen my fair share of battles. I may be old, but I'm not afraid to fight for what's right."

    Mortel: "My son's murderer must be brought to justice. I will not rest until he faces retribution!"

    Jean val Jean regarded her with respect, recognizing the fire that burned within her. "We welcome you, Mortel," he said, his voice filled with genuine admiration. "Your courage and determination are an inspiration to us all."

    Mortel nodded gracefully, a flicker of gratitude in her eyes. "Thank you," she said simply, her voice tinged with emotion. "Together, I believe we can make a difference."


    As Mortel finished speaking, another figure stepped forward, his presence less imposing but no less determined. "Greetings, good people," he began, his voice smooth and persuasive. "My name is Kaerun, and I couldn't help but overhear your discussion about murders and rewards."

    His words were met with a mixture of curiosity and skepticism from the group, who regarded him with cautious interest. Kaerun's easy smile did little to alleviate their doubts, but there was an undeniable charisma about him that drew them in.

    "I may not have the battle-hardened experience of some," he continued, his tone confident yet humble, "but I bring with me a keen intellect and a sharp wit. I assure you, I can be of great assistance in unraveling this mystery."

    Jean val Jean eyed Kaerun warily, his skepticism clear in his expression. "You seem quite young. What makes you think you're up to the task?" he questioned, his voice edged with suspicion.

    Kaerun flashed a confident grin, undeterred by Dougle's doubt. "I've got skills you wouldn't believe," he boasted, his tone brimming with confidence. "You won't regret having me on your team."

    The party looked around and searched for Jet, but could not find her. After looking everywhere for a while, they decided to give up on her. Jet's absence weighed on the group, a silent reminder of the unpredictable nature of their chosen path. Despite her departure, her presence lingered in their memories, such as the camaraderie they had shared on their previous adventures.

    However with the departing of one person, also they welcomed the two new additions in the forms of Mortal and Kaerun, eager to prove their worth in their quest for justice.


    Dougle and Jean val Jean decided to go to the barracks to visit Guard Captain Siegfried, their expressions tense with anticipation as they sought information about the recent murders.

    Siegfried wondered why they were asking this and Dougle showed him the official letter with seal from Rothan Blackshield to do the undercover research of finding the cause of the murders in Royal Oak.

    As Siegfried recounted the grisly details of each murder, a somber silence fell over the group. Each description painted a picture of violence and brutality, leaving them with a sense of unease.

    "One body, struck on the head with maybe...a shovel or spade," Siegfried began, his voice carrying the weight of the tragedy. "Another, a brutal assault with a most likely a club near the marshes. A victim bearing the marks of a sword, discovered in the alleys of our town. And one has been poisoned, a silent killer lurking among us. Finally, a gruesome combination of slashing and strangulation, the body hidden in a rain barrel near the countryside."

    Dougle and Jean val Jean exchanged grim looks, the gravity of their task weighing heavily upon them. "We must find the truth behind these murders," Dougle declared, his voice tinged with determination. "And bring justice to those who have been wronged."

    Siegfried's demeanor was grim as he confirmed their suspicions, revealing that the bodies of the victims had been laid to rest in the graveyard under the watchful eye of Emerson, the graveyard's owner.

    "As much as I wish I could provide more clarity," Siegfried admitted with a furrowed brow, "I'm afraid I don't know all the causes of death exactly. Emerson, the graveyard's keeper, keeps meticulous records of each passing. He'll have the details you seek."

    "We need to speak with Emerson," Jean val Jean stated, his voice carrying a sense of urgency. "He may have information that could aid us in our investigation."

    Siegfried nodded in agreement, his features etched with concern. "Emerson can be found at the graveyard," he replied, gesturing toward the direction of the somber burial grounds. "But be cautious. He's a private man, and these are troubling times."

    Jean val Jean exchanged a glance with Dougle, their determination undeterred by the lack of information. "Then to the graveyard we go," Jean val Jean declared, his voice firm. "We'll uncover the truth, one way or another."


    As the party made their way through the graveyard, their footsteps echoed softly against the stone pathways, the sound mingling with the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze. Rows of graves lined the paths, each adorned with flowers and tokens of remembrance. Shafts of sunlight filtered through the branches of ancient trees, casting dappled patterns of light and shadow on the ground below.

    Approaching a figure clad in long brown robes, the party inquired about Emerson's whereabouts. The servant, his face partially obscured by the folds of his hood, nodded in response. "Emerson is in the morgue, just ahead," he replied in a hushed tone, gesturing towards a stone building nestled amidst the graves.

    Jean val Jean stepped forward, his gaze unwavering. "Thank you for your assistance," he said with a nod of appreciation before the party continued on their path towards the morgue, anticipation and trepidation mingling in their hearts.

    As they approached the stone morgue in the middle of the graveyard, their senses heightened, wary of the secrets that lay within the morgue's confines. The ever-watchful bird circling above caught their attention, a silent observer in the sky.

    The party couldn't help but notice the peculiar behavior of the bird as it circled overhead. Its movements seemed almost calculated, as though it were observing them with a keen intelligence. Caerbannog squinted up at the sky, his curiosity piqued by the bird's behavior.

    The bird's sharp cry pierced the air, its raucous call drawing the party's attention to its sudden descent toward the back of the morgue. Dougle's brow furrowed as he watched the bird's flight path, a sense of unease settling over him.

    "Do you think it's going straight to Emerson?" he murmured, voicing the question that lingered in all their minds. Jean val Jean glanced at him, his expression reflecting a mixture of concern and determination.

    "It's worth checking," Jean val Jean replied, his tone resolute as he quickened his pace toward the morgue's entrance. With a shared nod of agreement, the party followed suit, their anticipation building with each step as they prepared to confront the mysteries that awaited them within.

    As they approached the morgue, Dougle's expression darkened with suspicion. "Something doesn't feel quite right. I don't trust these servants, and then there is that bird" he muttered under his breath, casting a wary glance at the figure in brown robes.

    Jean val Jean placed a reassuring hand on Dougle's shoulder, his voice steady. "We'll proceed with caution," he replied, his tone firm. "But for now, let's focus on finding Emerson." With a determined nod, the group continued on their path, their senses alert to any potential danger lurking in the shadows of the graveyard.


    Upon entering the morgue, the sight of rows of wooden shutters containing lifeless forms sent a chill down their spines. Each shutter held the remains of a soul departed, marked with either a green or red label, signifying their final journey.

    Caerbannog, guided by an otherworldly connection, approached the body of Mortel's son. With a solemn reverence, he communed with the departed spirit, unraveling the tragic tale of his demise. Stabbed by someone named Bill amidst the serene backdrop of the marshes, his life extinguished for stumbling upon a forbidden truth.

    As the spirit of Mortel's son spoke through the ethereal veil between worlds, his words painted a haunting picture of intrigue and danger. With a heavy heart, he recounted the moment of his untimely demise, a stark warning echoing in his spectral voice. The image of cloaked figures, their intentions shrouded in mystery, conjuring the spectral visage of a red gemstone hung ominously in the air. He saw something he shouldn't have seen...

    The revelation sent a shiver through the assembled party, the weight of his words casting a pall over their quest for justice. Yet, fueled by determination and righteous fury, they vowed to uncover the truth behind the sinister machinations lurking in the shadows, guided by the memory of Mortel's son and the promise of retribution.

    As Caerbannog communed with another spirit of an unfortunate victim, another layer of the dark tapestry unfurled before the party's eyes. The scene painted by the deceased revealed a chilling tableau of violence and chaos.

    The echoes of the town square rang in his ears as the spirit recounted the harrowing events of that fateful day. A clown, garishly adorned in colorful attire, wielding a large object with deadly intent, struck down the victim amidst the bustling crowds. The presence of a colored ball, innocently rolling nearby, served as a macabre backdrop to the sinister act unfolding before their eyes.

    The revelation hung heavy in the air, a stark reminder of the darkness that lurked beneath the surface of their seemingly tranquil town. With newfound resolve, the party vowed to unearth the secrets hidden within the shadows, justice fueling their quest for truth.


    The group saw in the distance further down the morgue, a diminutive figure cloaked in black, his features obscured by the dim light filtering through the dusty windows. His bald head gleamed faintly in the wan illumination, framed by patches of hair clinging stubbornly to the sides, a stark contrast to the darkness that enveloped him.

    The group walked up to the man, who introduced himself as Emerson, who is the owner of this graveyard in the outskirts of Royal Oak.

    Kaerun: "Mister Emerson, do you know anything about these murders that have been happening in the past weeks?"

    Emerson grins nervously: "I assure you, I know nothing of these heinous acts."

    Kaerun concentrated himself using a supernatural power "He's lying. His thoughts are filled with darkness. He doesn't want us to find out anything. He's evil!"

    The party looked at Kaerun and most of them murmured in disbelief

    Brother Hemlock: "Hold on a moment. How can you be so sure? Mind-reading? That's... unusual."

    Zodd: "Yeah, ain't that some fancy magic? I've never seen nothin' like it."

    Kaerun: insistently "I know what I sensed. He's hiding something, I'm sure of it."

    Jean val Jean: cautiously "We need to tread carefully here. Accusations like that can't be made lightly."

    Dougle: "But what if he's right? What if Emerson's hiding something important?"

    Jean val Jean: "We don't have any proof, Dougle. We can't just apprehend him without evidence."

    Kaerun: growing impatient "Fine, but mark my words, there's darkness in this man's heart."

    Kaerun drew his blade and his impulsive strike cleaved through the stifling air of the morgue. Emerson recoiled in shock, his eyes widening with alarm as he stumbled backward, his hands raised in a feeble attempt to ward off the sudden onslaught. His fear hung in the air as Kaerun's blade arced toward its target, its gleaming edge poised to rend flesh from bone in a single, fateful stroke.

    Emerson: "No, please! What are you doing?"

    Kaerun: "He's hiding something, I know it!"

    Before Kaerun's blade could find its mark, Zodd sprang into action, his stout form interposing itself between the frenzied attacker and his intended victim. With a swift, decisive motion, Zodd seized Kaerun's arm, halting the lethal descent of the blade mere inches from Emerson's trembling form.

    Zodd: "Whoa there, Kaerun! We can't go around attacking folks without proof!"

    Kaerun: "But he's lying! I can sense it!"

    Jean val Jean: "Enough! We'll find another way to get the truth."

    Brother Hemlock: "Indeed, violence is not the answer. Let us proceed with caution and prudence."

    Reluctantly, Kaerun lowered his blade, his breath coming in ragged gasps as the fervor of his righteous indignation ebbed away, leaving behind a bitter taste of frustration and doubt. As the tension in the room gradually dissipated, the group exchanged wary glances, each member acutely aware of the precariousness of their situation and the weight of the secrets that lay hidden within the shadows of the morgue's cold, stone walls.


    The party decides to leave the graveyard to its own and head downtown again. Also they have heared some passers-by talking about a performance in Rupert's Inn tonight, two clowns of Royal Oak, Binky and Pierro are going to give a performance.

    Dougle: Alright, I'm going to head to the barracks to see if I can dig up any information about this Bill character. Maybe someone there knows something useful.

    Jean val Jean: Sounds like a plan. I'll join you.

    Zodd: Aye, and what about us? Should we go see these clowns, then?

    Jean val Jean: It might not be a bad idea. We might pick up some useful information while we're there, or at least have a bit of entertainment to lighten the mood.

    Mortel: I'll come with you lot. Never been one for barracks and such. Rather see a good show.

    Kaerun: Count me in too. I could use a bit of distraction after that scene with Emerson. We'll meet you back here later.

    Brother Hemlock wrinkled his nose in distaste at the mention of clowns. "Clowns?" he scoffed, his voice laced with disdain. "Are you guys insane? I'd sooner wade through a bog of leeches than subject myself to such folly."

    As Dougle and Jean val Jean entered the barracks, they were greeted by the sight of soldiers going about their daily duties, the clatter of armor and the faint scent of oil permeating the air. Making their way through the bustling corridors, they approached a stern-looking man with a grizzled beard, presumably Sergeant Jake, who stood overseeing the training of recruits.

    Dougle: Excuse me, Sergeant Jake. We're looking for some information about one of your soldiers, Bill. Do you have a moment?

    Sergeant Jake: Aye, yes who are you and why are you asking this?

    Jean val Jean: Dougle, show him the papers.

    Dougle sighed and took out the official papers with the seal of mayor Rothan Blackshield on them, about doing an undercover operations to find out about the murders of royal oak.

    Sergeant Jake's eyebrows shot up in surprise as he scanned the official papers presented by Dougle. He glanced between the papers and the two adventurers before him, clearly taken aback by the revelation.

    Sergeant Jake: Well, I'll be... surprised. You lot are doing a secret undercover operation?!

    Jean val Jean: We're just doing our part to help uncover the truth behind these murders, Sergeant. Every bit of information counts.

    Sergeant Jake: Well, what do you need to know about Bill?

    Jean val Jean: We've heard he's been patrolling near the graveyard. Could you tell us more about him?

    Sergeant Jake: Bill's a bit of a hothead, if you ask me. But he gets the job done. Patrols the northern outskirts with a couple of his mates. Keeps an eye on things, you know? But if there's anything fishy going on, he's usually the first to sniff it out.

    Dougle: Any idea why he might be up there?

    Sergeant Jake: No clue. That's his post, plain and simple. Anything else?

    Jean val Jean: Actually, yes. We've also heard about a man named Bruno who's supposedly running a thieves guild in town. Is that true?

    Sergeant Jake: sighs Aye, it's true. Bruno's got his fingers in many pies around here. But he keeps the riffraff in check, so the captain turns a blind eye. Keeps the peace, or so they say.

    Sergeant Jake: We have heared rumours of men of Bruno dealing with Lord Ignatus of Silverdale, though we are not entirely sure what his role is in all of this. Maybe he is somehow involved with the opium.

    Dougle: "Lord Ignatus? Involved in smuggling? But he's a noble! Why would he risk his reputation like that?"

    Jean val Jean: "Appearances can be deceiving, as they say. It wouldn't be the first time a noble was involved in illicit activities. We'll have to tread carefully then. If he's involved, we need solid evidence before we confront him."

    When asking some more questions, they also learn about a doctor named Zivorski who travels frequently between New Haven and Royal Oak. Because there is only one doctor for two neighbouring towns, when he's not available, his assistant Binky tends to the wounded, or they seek help at the shrine from a priest.

    Dougle: Interesting... Well, thanks for your time, Sergeant. We'll be on our way.

    With that, Dougle and Jean val Jean left the barracks, their minds buzzing with newfound information and the weight of their task ahead.

    Dougle: So, it seems Bill isn't exactly the friendliest character around here. And he's patrolling near the graveyard with two others. Could be worth checking out.

    Jean val Jean: Agreed. But what about this Bruno character? Why would the mayor tolerate someone running a thieves guild in our town?

    Dougle: I'm not sure, but it sounds like there's more to this than meets the eye. And those reports of possible raids on nearby farms... We might need to look into that too.

    Jean val Jean: Definitely. Let's gather the others and head back to the inn. We've got some planning to do.


    As the group entered Rupert's Inn, the lively chatter and clinking of tankards filled the air. The inn was bustling with patrons eager for entertainment after a long day's work. The stage was set for Pierro's performance, with colorful banners hanging from the rafters and a spotlight illuminating the center. Binky could unfortunately not attend, due to a headache.

    Pierro, adorned in vibrant attire, took the stage with a flourish, his jovial demeanor immediately captivating the audience. His jokes, though simple, elicited hearty laughter from the crowd, providing a welcome respite from the day's worries.

    Pierro, amidst the laughter and applause of his audience, regaled them with tales from his unconventional career path. "Ah, you see," he chuckled, "being a clown isn't just about pratfalls and painted faces. No, no, my friends. Why, I've even dabbled in the fine art of accounting!"

    With a twinkle in his eye, he continued, "Some might say, 'Pierro, how can you possibly juggle numbers when you're always juggling balls?' But let me tell you, my friends, balancing debits and credits is just another form of clowning around, if you ask me!"

    Pierro looked at the audience with amusement and said: "anyways, why did they close the graveyard?"

    - Silence -

    Pierro answered: "Because people were 'dying' to get in!" Pierro's jest echoed through the room, followed by some laughter from the spectators. Another quip followed, drawing chuckles from all corners of the inn.

    Amidst the laughter, Pierro proceeded with his daring act, selecting an unwilling volunteer from the audience. Kaerun, though hesitant, stepped forward, his apprehension palpable. As Pierro prepared to enact his illusion, tension hung in the air, mingling with the anticipation of the crowd.

    Kaerun walked up the stage and entered a man sized cardboard box that was especially prepared for him.

    With a dramatic flourish, Pierro began his performance, sliding some swords on different spots into the box. Each movement executed with precision. The sight of swords piercing the box containing Kaerun sent murmurs of excitement through the audience. Gasps followed as fake blood trickled from the box, heightening the illusion's suspense.

    As Kaerun emerged unscathed, relieved applause erupted from the crowd, mingling with Pierro's triumphant laughter.


    As dusk settled over the town, Dougle led the group on their next venture, determined to unravel the mysteries that lay ahead. With the evening air thick with anticipation, they set out to find Bill and investigate Binky's home on Clown's Road.

    They walked north outside of the town and followed a gravelly path that ran parallel to the graveyard, aiming to find Bill somewhere.

    Their path crossed with two female bards, Crystal and Elara, whose melodic voices floated through the night air. Kaerun, ever the charmer, struck up a conversation with them, discussing the possibility of a collaborative performance.

    As they ventured onward, their journey took an unexpected turn as they stumbled upon Binky the clown in the distance, his usual jovial demeanor replaced by a nervous energy.

    At the sight of the party, the clown, his usual grin vanished, replaced by a look of sheer panic. Without a moment's hesitation, he turned on his heels and bolted straight the other way, his colorful attire a blur as he tried to disappear into the night.

    "Hold it right there, clown!" Jean val Jean's command rang out, cutting through the air like a blade. But despite his authoritative tone, Binky didn't heed his words, his fear propelling him onward, his form quickly vanishing on the gravel path into the night.

    The party immedeately decided to pursue him, rapidly dashing after him.

    Binky: "You've got it all wrong! I swear, I'm innocent! You've got the wrong clown!"

    Jean val Jean pursuing him fervently: "That's what they all say!"

    His frantic protestations fell on deaf ears until Caerbannog's display of power brought him to a reluctant surrender.

    As the party caught up with Binky, he gasped for breath, his chest heaving as he struggled to speak. "Wait! You've got it all wrong! I heard things... at the inn," he managed between ragged breaths. "Bill the Merchant, Bill the soldier... they were talkin' about a guy named Dan. Said he knew too much. Eventhough he is in prison, they were plannin' to take care of him," he blurted out, his words tumbling over each other in his haste to convey the information.

    Jean val Jean's eyes narrowed as he processed the implications. "Dan? Who's Dan?" he asked, his voice tense with urgency.

    Binky shook his head, his expression troubled. "I dunno, they didn't say. But they made it sound serious. And as for my hammer... it's gone, stolen from me," he added, a note of frustration creeping into his voice.

    Kaerun, ever vigilant, delved into Binky's thoughts, searching for any trace of guilt or deception. Yet, to his surprise, he found none, but did take over a big headache. As he seemed innocent, Binky's testimony shed light on a troubling revelation.

    The party decided to continue to walk through the grass, walking parallel to the town of royal oak. They kept walking westwards where Binky's house would be.

    Suddenly, the sight of the dead animal handler from the Zoo, lying in the grass sent a chill down the party's spines. Caerbannog approached cautiously, his senses attuned to the scene before him.

    "What happened here?" Jean val Jean asked, his voice low with concern.

    Caerbannog lowered his head, his bunny-like form radiating intensity as he probed the spirit of the fallen handler. "Bill and Bill... they fed him to the dinosaur," he growled, his voice filled with righteous anger.

    The implications hung heavy in the air as the group exchanged grim glances. "Several men, and a few robed spellcasters," Caerbannog continued, his tone grave. "We're dealing with something bigger than we thought."


    Kaerun decided to track their traces. He looked around and found their tracks. The path led them back east, the winding trail weaving through the countryside with Kaerun navigating effortlessly at the forefront. The air was thick with anticipation, the tension palpable as they pressed onward towards their destination.

    As the party approached the wall of the graveyard, Kaerun's keen eyesight caught sight of movement in the distance. "There they are," he whispered, gesturing towards the figures gathered near the graveyard wall.

    Jean val Jean tightened his grip on his weapon, his expression determined. "Stay alert, everyone," he cautioned, scanning the scene before them.

    The group observed the gathering from a safe distance, noting the ominous presence of some black-robed figures, soldiers, and presumably the two Bills. Their attention was drawn to an elderly lady among them, accompanied by a towering dinosaur, a sight that sent a shiver down their spines.

    "Something's not right here," Brother Hemlock muttered, his voice tinged with concern.

    Before they could react, Kaerun spotted movement in the distance away from the group, near the bushes. "More of them," he warned, his eyes narrowing as he assessed the threat.

    With tension thick in the air, the party prepared themselves for whatever confrontation lay ahead.


    Chapter 4, the Fight near the Graveyard - 24.04.2024


    As the party approached the dimly lit torches near the graveyard wall on the hill, the scene before them unfolded like a sinister tableau. Two figures clad in ominous black robes stood beside two equally foreboding priests dressed in dark robes, their presence casting long shadows in the flickering light.

    Among them stood Bill the merchant and Bill the soldier, flanked by two other soldiers, their faces twisted with malice. Bill the soldier was an older battle-hardened veteran wearing chain mail, a long sword and a large shield. He had some obvious scars on his face, perhaps from battles past.

    An old woman walking with a staff, a hunched figure with an air of malevolence, stood nearby, her wrinkled visage betraying years of dark dealings.

    Near Bill the Merchant loomed a fearsome sight—a dinosaur, its massive form outlined against the night sky, a silent sentinel guarding the group.

    Also, in the distance away from the group, were two figures cloaked in long brown robes, their intentions shrouded in mystery as they observed the gathering from afar.

    Dougle's voice broke the tense silence, his words tinged with disbelief and apprehension. "Wow, there are quite a lot of them," he murmured, his gaze fixed on the assembled group. "Looks like all the bad guys decided to have a little reunion. Do you think they're here for the opium deal?"

    Brother Hemlock, his expression darkening with disdain, said with a heavy breath. "Those blasted clowns have caused enough trouble and now this!" he muttered, his distaste for their newly discovered adversaries evident in his voice.

    Jean val Jean, his drow features obscured by the darkness, shifted restlessly in the shadows, his anticipation palpable as he prepared for a stealthy assault.

    Meanwhile, Zodd, the towering barbarian, stood at the ready, his muscles tensed for action as he awaited the party's decision.

    Dougle remarked, "We can't let them continue their nefarious schemes unchecked. It's time to put an end to this. Let’s try to capture them all by hitting them unconscious, so that we can interrogate them later on!"

    Jean val Jean nodded in agreement, his eyes gleaming with determination. "We can take them by surprise if we act swiftly," he suggested, his mind already racing with strategies.

    Zodd, his grip tightening on his axe, let out a low growl of anticipation. "I've been itching for a fight, I'll just follow you" he admitted, his dwarven features set in a fierce scowl.

    Brother Hemlock's voice cut through the tension like a knife, his tone filled with unease as he regarded the looming silhouette of the dinosaur. "So, there's the dinosaur," he remarked, a note of trepidation coloring his words.

    With a shared glance and a silent nod of agreement, the party steeled themselves for the confrontation ahead, their resolve unwavering as they prepared to confront the darkness lurking within the shadows of the graveyard.

    After observing the situation, they decided to have a go for it. With their resolve hardened and their weapons at the ready, the party advanced towards their enemies, their steps echoing in the stillness of the night as they prepared to confront the forces of darkness head-on.

     

    Taking their foes by surprise, Mortal and Zodd charged towards Bill the soldier, flanked by his two cohorts with furious determination. Mortel, her barbarian instincts honed by years of combat attacked immediately, her axe gleaming in the torchlight as she prepared to engage the enemy.

    With a roar, Mortel swung her axe in a wide arc, aiming for Bill's shield. But Bill, a seasoned veteran of countless battles, was quick to react, bringing up his shield to deflect the blow with practiced precision. The impact sent sparks flying as the weapons clashed, filling the air with the sound of metal on metal.

    Meanwhile, Zodd, the towering barbarian, squared off against the two corrupt soldiers, his muscles rippling beneath his barbaric attire as he prepared to unleash his fury upon them. The soldiers, though lacking in finesse compared to Bill, fought with a relentless tenacity, their swords flashing in the dim light as they sought to overwhelm their opponent.

    As the battle began, soon insults and taunts flew back and forth between the combatants, adding to the chaotic din of clashing weapons and shouted commands. Bill, his face set in a grim mask of determination, shouted orders to his comrades, coordinating their attacks with military precision.

    Jean val Jean and Dougle, launched arrows in the meanwhile striking the priests and mages standing on the hill by surprise, wounding them somewhat.

     

    Granny looked in surprise: "Well, well, it looks like some people decided to show up uninvited at this time of the night! It seems we have some unwanted guests."

    Priest: "Indeed, Granny. Seems like these fools stumbled upon something they shouldn't have. No matter, we'll make quick work of them."

    Granny: "Priests, mages, soldiers, to arms! Don't let these meddling pests get any closer!"

    As the party advanced, spells were cast, and weapons were drawn on both sides, the tension thickened quickly as the foes were on alert.

     

    Bill: "So you have discovered our activity! If you will not stay out, you will have to face the consequences.

    Zodd lashed out to bill, his weapon bashing against the edge of his shield, "take that, you loser!"

    Bill: "Is that the best you've got, you sorry lot of misfits? You fight like a bunch of drunken tavern brawlers!"

    Zodd: "At least we're not hiding behind shields like cowards! Come face me like a true warrior, if you've got the guts!"

    Bill: "Guts? Ha! You wouldn't know courage if it bit you in the backside, barbarian!"

    Mortel: "Watch your tongue, soldier boy, or I'll slice it off and feed it to the crows!"

    Bill: "You think you can intimidate me, little one? I've faced fiercer foes than you on the battlefield!"

     

    But Mortel and Zodd were no strangers to combat, and they fought with a ferocity born of desperation. With each swing of their weapons, they sought to break through their enemies' defenses, their blows fueled by adrenaline and sheer brute strength.

    Despite Bill's skillful defense, Mortel managed to land a glancing blow against his side, her axe biting deep into his armor with a satisfying crunch. With a grunt of pain, Bill staggered backward, his grip on his shield faltering for just a moment before he regained his footing.

    The battle raged on, each side trading blows in a relentless dance of death and destruction. But amidst the chaos, one thing was clear: neither side would back down without a fight, and the outcome of the skirmish hung in the balance as the combatants clashed with all the fury of a raging storm.

     

    With a sinister command, one of the priests beckoned forth his dark magic. As his incantation echoed through the night air, a malevolent grin twisted his lips. "You folks like to celebrate the coming harvest festival so much? Here are some pumpkins!" he taunted, his voice dripping with malice.

    As the priest chanted his incantation, the air crackled with dark energy, and suddenly, the eerie glow of eight small pumpkins illuminated the scene, summoned from the depths of the arcane realm. Their sinister red eyes seemed to fixate on the party, and with a wicked bounce, they launched themselves into the fray.

     

    The pumpkins wasted no time in springing into action, bouncing from the ground with surprising agility as they closed in on the unsuspecting party. With each bound, they emitted an eerie cackle, their intent clear: to sow chaos and terror among their foes.

    Mortel, caught off guard by the sudden appearance of the bouncing pumpkins, grunted in surprise as three of them collided with her mid-battle. "What in blazes are these?!" she exclaimed, swatting at the airborne gourds as they bobbed around her.

    Zodd, his muscles tensed with the effort of fending off the corrupt soldiers, shot a glance over his shoulder at the commotion. "Focus on the real threats, Mortel! Don't let these failed pieces of fruit distract you!" he shouted, his voice barely audible over the din of battle.

    Meanwhile, Jean Val Jean, still lurking in the shadows, observed the chaos unfolding with a calculating gaze. "These pumpkins are merely a diversion," he remarked coolly to Dougle, who had taken cover nearby. "The mages and priests are the true threat. We must eliminate them first."

    Dougle nodded grimly, his bow drawn and ready. "Agreed. I'll cover you," he replied, his eyes scanning the battlefield for any sign of the mages' next move.

    Amidst the chaos of flying pumpkins and clashing swords, Zodd raised his voice above the tumult. "Stay together! We can overcome this if we work as a team!" he called out, rallying his companions to stand firm against the onslaught of dark magic and deceit.

     

     

    Bill the merchant, clad in a worn blue tunic, tugged impatiently on the leash of the towering dinosaur standing beside him. The massive creature, its scales gleaming faintly in the torchlight, emitted a low, rumbling yawn, seemingly uninterested in the unfolding chaos around it.

    Frustration etched across Bill's features as he struggled to rein in his unruly companion. "Come on, Jaws," he grumbled under his breath, his voice tinged with annoyance. "This is no time for lounging around."

    But despite Bill's efforts, the dinosaur remained apathetic, its attention wandering lazily as it surveyed the scene with a disinterested gaze.

     

    As Mortel and Zodd battled against Bill and his cohorts, the group mischievous pumpkins bounced their way, their glowing eyes fixed on their targets. With surprising agility, some of them leaped towards Mortel and Zodd, their tiny forms delivering surprisingly potent blows.

    Mortel grunted in annoyance as one of the pumpkins slammed into her back, sending a jolt of pain shooting through her shoulders. Zodd fared no better as another pumpkin bashed against his side, its impact causing him to stagger slightly.

    Though the damage inflicted by the pumpkins was minimal, their relentless assault proved to be a significant distraction in the midst of battle. Mortel swatted at the airborne gourds, trying to fend them off while keeping her focus on her primary adversaries.

    Meanwhile, Dougle, ever the opportunist, couldn't resist adding a touch of humor to the chaos. With a mischievous glint in his eyes and a sardonic tone, he shouted out above the din of battle, "Oh, look at that! We'll have plenty of pumpkin soup tonight!"

    His words elicited a chuckle from some of his companions, offering a brief moment of levity in the midst of the intense combat.     In the meanwhile, one of the pumpkins drifted off to stalk Jean val Jean, but he easily pierced it with his rapier.

    But before he could loose his bolt, a sharp hiss cut through the night air as a priest spotted his movements. With a flick of his wrist, the priest summoned forth a night lizard, its sinewy form emerging from the darkness, eyes gleaming with predatory hunger.

    Caught off guard, Jean Val Jean barely had time to react as the night lizard lunged towards him, its tongue whipping out like a viper's strike. The venomous appendage struck true, sinking into his flesh and injecting a potent toxin, that would last for a short time.

    Jean Val Jean recoiled, pain flaring through his veins as the poison coursed through his body. Gritting his teeth against the waves of agony, he fought to maintain his focus, knowing that any lapse in concentration could prove fatal.

     

     

    As Jean Val Jean battled against the relentless assault of the night lizard, a new threat emerged from the shadows. With a chilling incantation, the black-robed priest summoned forth a dark, sinister-looking monkey, its eyes glinting with malicious intent.

    The monkey leaped into action, agile and swift, its movements a blur as it closed in on Jean Val Jean from the other side. With lightning-fast strikes, it pummeled him with its fists, each blow landing with enough force to send waves of pain rippling through his body.

    Jean Val Jean gritted his teeth against the onslaught, his muscles burning with exertion as he fought to defend himself from both the night lizard and the malevolent ape. "Great," he muttered through clenched teeth, "just what I need, an ape! Doesn't make life much easier."

    Despite the odds stacked against him, Jean Val Jean refused to yield, his determination unwavering as he continued to battle against the relentless assault of his adversaries.

     

     

    Bill, frustration etched on his face, tugged desperately at the leash dangling from the dinosaur's neck, hoping to goad the massive creature into action. With a heavy sigh, he shouted commands, urging the dinosaur named Jaws to join the fray and unleash its formidable strength upon the party.

    However, Jaws seemed more interested in observing the chaotic scene unfolding before it than in obeying Bill's commands. The dinosaur ambled down the hillside, its gaze shifting lazily from one combatant to another, a hint of amusement flickering in its eyes.

    Bill's frustration mounted with each passing moment, his shouts growing more desperate as he attempted to spur the reluctant dinosaur into action. "Come on, Jaws!" he bellowed, his voice tinged with exasperation. "Bite them hard, come on, what else did we get you for!"

    But despite Bill's efforts, Jaws remained stubbornly indifferent, unwilling to heed his master's commands as the battle raged on around them.

     

     

    Jean val Jean swiftly darted behind the cover of a large rock, his rapier drawn and ready for battle. As the night lizard slithered towards him, its tongue flicking menacingly, Jean val Jean prepared to strike.

    "Come on, you slimy creature!" he taunted, his voice laced with determination.

    With a deft movement, Jean val Jean lunged forward, his rapier flashing in the moonlight as it found its mark, piercing the lizard's scaly hide. The creature let out a hiss of pain, but Jean val Jean wasn't finished yet.

    Meanwhile, Dougle crouched behind a nearby bush, his crossbow trained on the dark monkey that leaped towards Jean val Jean. With a steady hand, he released the bolt, the projectile sailing through the air with deadly accuracy.

    "Take that, you filthy beast!" Dougle shouted triumphantly as the bolt struck true, felling the monkey after a few well aimed shots.

    Back at the rock, Jean val Jean danced nimbly out of reach of the lizard's snapping jaws, his movements fluid and graceful. With each strike of his rapier, he whittled away at the creature's defenses, his skill in combat evident with every calculated move.

    "Is that the best you've got?" he goaded, his eyes gleaming with determination.

    With a final thrust, Jean val Jean delivered the decisive blow, his rapier piercing the lizard's heart and sending it collapsing to the ground in a lifeless heap.

    As the dust settled, Jean val Jean and Dougle shared a victorious grin, their teamwork proving once again to be a formidable force on the battlefield.

    As the chaos of battle began to subside, Zodd, fueled by adrenaline and determination, eyed the rope dangling from the dinosaur's neck with a sense of opportunity. With a swift motion, he lunged forward, his large hands reaching out to grasp the thick coil of rope.

    Bill the merchant, sensing the impending danger, nervously backed away, his eyes wide with apprehension as he watched Zodd's bold move. He knew all too well the power of the towering beast, and the prospect of angering it filled him with dread.

    Zodd's muscles strained as he pulled himself upward, his powerful frame ascending a few feet along the length of the rope. For a moment, it seemed as though he might succeed in his audacious attempt to subdue the dinosaur.

    But fate had other plans. Just as Zodd began to make progress, the smooth surface of the rope slipped through his grasp, sending him tumbling back to the ground below. He landed with a thud in the soft grass, his pride stinging from the failed endeavor.

    With a frustrated grunt, Zodd pushed himself upright, casting a rueful glance at the elusive rope dangling just out of reach. Bill the merchant let out a nervous sigh of relief, grateful that disaster had been averted, at least for the time being.

     

     

    As Jaws, the towering dinosaur, approached Brother Hemlock, a sense of trepidation gripped the cleric's heart. He braced himself for what he expected to be a menacing attack from the massive creature, his nerves on edge as he prepared to defend himself.

    However, to Brother Hemlock's surprise, Jaws did not lunge forward with teeth bared and claws extended. Instead, the formidable beast leaned in close, its massive head looming over the cleric with an almost curious expression.

    Before Brother Hemlock could react, Jaws extended its long, slender tongue, and with surprising gentleness, gave the cleric a thorough lick from chin to forehead. The unexpected gesture caught Brother Hemlock off guard, leaving him momentarily stunned as he felt the rough texture of the dinosaur's tongue against his skin.

    As Jaws withdrew, Brother Hemlock couldn't help but feel a sense of relief wash over him. The tension that had gripped him moments earlier began to dissipate, replaced by a mixture of confusion and amusement at the dinosaur's unexpected display of affection.

    With a wry smile, Brother Hemlock watched as Jaws lumbered away, its massive form enthusiastically thumping to the other side of the field. And as he wiped the lingering residue of the dinosaur's lick from his face, a newfound determination took root in his heart.

    "I'll make sure this dinosaur never ever goes back to the Zoo in Royal Oak," Brother Hemlock vowed to himself, his voice filled with conviction. From that moment on, he knew he would stop at nothing to ensure Jaws found a safe and happy home far away from the confines of captivity.

     

    As the battle raged on, the air crackled with arcane energy as the mages and priests unleashed a barrage of magical assaults upon the party. Brilliant streaks of light shot through the darkness, accompanied by the unmistakable sound of incantations chanted with fervor.

    Magical missiles streaked across the battlefield, finding their marks amidst the chaos of combat. Fire bolt spells erupted in bursts of flame, casting eerie shadows across the landscape as they sought out their targets with deadly precision.

    Despite the party's best efforts, the tide of battle seemed to turn against them as the mages and priests pressed their advantage with relentless determination. Yet, amidst the swirling tempest of magic and mayhem, the party remained steadfast in their resolve, determined to emerge victorious against overwhelming odds.

     

     

    Dougle and Brother Hemlock, their voices cutting through the din of battle, urged their companions to show restraint and capture the bandits alive for interrogation. Amidst the chaos of combat, their words carried a note of reason, a reminder of the value of information gleaned from those who sought to do them harm.

    "Remember, we must capture them alive!" Brother Hemlock declared, his voice firm with conviction. "There are answers we seek, and these bandits may hold the key to unraveling the mysteries that plague our town."

    Dougle, his gaze steely with determination, echoed his sentiment. "Killing them won't solve anything," she insisted. "We need to bring them to justice and uncover the truth behind their nefarious deeds."

    The rest of the group nodded in agreement, their resolve strengthened by the wisdom of their companions. With renewed purpose, they fought on, their goal clear: to subdue their adversaries and bring them to face the consequences of their actions.

     

     

    Granny, her eyes glinting with malice, unleashed a bolt of crackling blue lightning that seared through the air with deadly precision, striking Mortel amidst her battle with the two bandits. The electrical surge coursed through Mortel's body, causing her to stagger and falter, her muscles spasming from the shock.

    With a cackle that echoed through the night, Granny's raspy voice cut through the chaos. "You thought you could challenge me, dearie? I've seen more battles than you've had hot dinners!" she jeered, her words dripping with scorn.

    As Mortel gritted her teeth against the pain, Granny's laughter filled the air once more, a haunting chorus of mockery that seemed to taunt the very fabric of their resolve. "You'll learn your lesson soon enough, young ones. The world ain't a kind place for fools like you!" she crowed, her voice carrying a chilling warning.

    Despite the agony coursing through her veins, Mortel steadied herself, her eyes blazing with defiance. With a fierce determination, she pressed on, refusing to be cowed by Granny's cruel taunts.

    With a fervent prayer on his lips, Brother Hemlock invoked the healing powers bestowed upon him by his faith. A gentle glow enveloped Mortel as his soothing words washed over her, closing her wounds and restoring her strength.

     

     

    As a black bird suddenly streaked through the night sky, its form a shadow against the stars, Dougle's keen eyes caught sight of it. With a swift motion, the bird unleashed a faint blue ray that struck Jaws, the towering dinosaur, causing him to bellow in rage and lash out with his massive claws.

    Zodd, caught off guard by the sudden assault, barely had time to react as Jaws lunged forward, his jaws snapping shut with terrifying force. The sharp teeth sank into Zodd's flesh, eliciting a cry of pain from the barbarian warrior.

    Amidst the chaos, Dougle immediately raised his bow, his fingers deftly drawing an arrow from his quiver. With a steady aim, he released the arrow, but it soared wide, missing its mark as the bird vanished into the darkness.

    "The blasted bird used some foul magic!" Dougle exclaimed, his voice tinged with frustration. "We need to keep an eye out for it. It's no ordinary creature!"

    "Stay still, you feathered troublemaker," he muttered under his breath, his fingers taut on the bowstring.

    With a swift release, another arrow soared through the air, but the bird was too quick, dodging and weaving with agile grace. Dougle gritted his teeth in frustration as his shot missed its mark, the bird soaring higher into the night.

     

     

    With a fierce battle cry, Zodd charged up the hill, his mighty axe cleaving through the air as he closed in on one of the priests. With a swift swing, he struck a priest, knocking him unconscious with a single blow.

    But Granny, the malevolent figure standing nearby, raised her staff high, her voice rising in a dark incantation. A crackling bolt of lightning shot forth from her staff, striking Zodd with devastating force. The barbarian warrior staggered back, his muscles convulsing from the electric shock, before collapsing to the ground, unconscious and defeated.

    Granny's eerie laughter echoed through the night, a chilling sound filled with malice and triumph, as she reveled in her cruel victory.

     

    Turning his attention to Zodd, Brother Hemlock uttered another prayer, channeling Divine energy to mend the barbarian's injuries. With a grunt, Zodd rose to his feet, his determination renewed as he prepared to rejoin the fray.

    Spotting Granny attempting to retreat, Zodd charged forward with a fierce roar, his axe swinging in a deadly arc. Granny sought refuge behind one of the mages, but Zodd's relentless assault knew no bounds. With a mighty swing, he brought his axe down upon the mage, knocking him unconscious with a single blow.

     

     

    Zodd's rage burned hot as he advanced on Granny, ignoring the pleas of his companions to show mercy. With a ferocious growl, he swung his axe in a wide arc, determined to put an end to the old woman's wickedness.

    Despite the protests of his allies, Zodd showed little remorse for Granny, his gaze fixed firmly on the figure of the malevolent old woman in front of him.

    Granny's eyes widened in fear as she realized the barbarian's intent. She stumbled backward, her frail form no match for Zodd's relentless assault. With a swift strike, Zodd's axe found its mark, deeply cleaving her and knocking her to the ground with a resounding thud. As lots of blood flew around, he was making sure Granny was for once and for all defeated.

     

     

    Seeing their enemies’ activity die out quickly, the party soon claimed victory and tied up the mostly unconscious fallen opponents, dragging them together at one place.

    As the party rummaged through the belongings of their defeated foes, they uncovered a variety of items, each holding its own significance.

     

    Dougle held up the damaged scale mail, examining it with a critical eye. "This could be interesting once it's repaired," he remarked, tossing it over his shoulder into a pile.

    Meanwhile, Zodd hefted one of the swords, testing its weight with a nod of approval. "Not bad," he grunted, slipping it into his belt.

    Jean val Jean examined the two red gems with a discerning eye, turning them over in his hand as he weighed their value. "These could fetch a pretty penny if we find the right buyer," he remarked, a hint of excitement in his voice. "Let's make sure we keep them safe until then." With a satisfied nod, he carefully stowed the gems away, already envisioning the riches they could bring.

    Mortel approached the barrel of ale with caution, casting a wary glance at its contents. "Looks like they were planning for a wild night," she observed, spotting the hidden casket of opium nestled within.

    Brother Hemlock picked up the pouch of coins, his expression thoughtful. "We'll put this to good use," he assured the group, tucking it safely into his robes.

     

    Dougle's eyes sparkled with determination as he held up a new-found casket containing the hidden compartment he also saw in the tradehouse. "This is useful! It could be the evidence my father needs to help in cracking down on the illegal opium trade," he declared, his voice tinged with excitement.

    Jean val Jean nodded in agreement. "With this, we can expose the depths of corruption plaguing Royal Oak," he added, his tone resolute.

    Mortel glanced at the casket, her expression unreadable. "Let's hope it's enough to bring justice to those responsible for the suffering in our town and the killing of my son," she said quietly.

    Jean val Jean placed a firm, but reassuring hand on Dougle's shoulder for a short moment. He then patted him on the shoulder. "Your father will be proud of what you've accomplished here today," he said warmly.

     

    But their discovery took a darker turn when they uncovered the holy symbol of Mogrion, god of death and decay, its black orb casting a spooky shadow around him. Brother Hemlock scowled at the sight. "This is troubling," he muttered, his voice low with concern.

     

    When the body of Granny was searched through, the party found a Letter reading the following,

    “Dear all, as you know, time ticks and greater plans await. Please find the red life stone, find out as soon as possible who has it in their possession. It should not affect the opium smuggle.     The party exchanged puzzled glances as they read the contents of the letter found among Granny's possessions. Jean val Jean furrowed his brow, mulling over the implications. "Red life stone?" he muttered, glancing around at his companions. "What could that be?"

    Dougle scratched his head thoughtfully. "And who's this Dan they want removed?" he wondered aloud.

    Mortel, still nursing her wounds from the battle, shook her head in disbelief. "Seems like Granny was involved in more than just petty crime," she remarked grimly.

    Brother Hemlock spoke up. "We should keep this letter safe. It could prove valuable in unraveling the mysteries of Royal Oak."

    With a collective nod, the party carefully tucked away the letter, knowing that it held clues to a deeper conspiracy lurking beneath the surface of their quaint town.

    With their findings laid out before them, the party knew they had stumbled upon more than just treasure. Each item carried its own story, its own secrets waiting to be uncovered. And as they prepared to continue their journey, they did so with a newfound sense of purpose, determined to unravel the mysteries that lay ahead.

     

    With their adversaries defeated and tied up, the party gathered around the campfire, exhaustion etched into their features. Dougle heaved a weary sigh as he surveyed the unconscious bodies, nodding in agreement as the group decided to rest and regroup before continuing their journey.

    Jean val Jean wiped sweat from his brow, his drow features illuminated by the flickering firelight. "A shame about Granny," he remarked solemnly. "But perhaps her demise was for the best."

    Zodd grunted in agreement, his muscles still tensed from the battle. "Evil is evil, no matter the age, and she was way beyond that" he muttered, his gaze flickering towards the bound figures.

    Mortel nodded, her wounds tended to but still throbbing with pain. "We'll have to make do without her information," she said, her voice tinged with regret. "But at least the town will be safer now."

    Brother Hemlock murmured a prayer of healing as he was touching some of the party members that were wounded such as Mortel, his expression grave as he contemplated the events of the night. "Let Mielikki heal your wounds" he intoned softly, his words carrying on the evening breeze.

    As the night settled around them, the party began to prepare a makeshift camp, gathering wood for the fire and setting up a perimeter to keep watch. Despite the weariness weighing heavily upon them, they knew their journey was far from over. With a shared resolve, they settled in for the night, their thoughts turning to the challenges that lay ahead.

     

     

    With the adversaries subdued and the campfire crackling, the party set about collecting the smashed pumpkin parts strewn across the battlefield. Mortel and Zodd worked together, their movements synchronized as they gathered the remnants into a makeshift pot borrowed from their supplies.

    "Looks like we've got plenty for a hearty soup," Mortel remarked, a wry grin playing on her lips as she deposited the pumpkin pieces into the pot.

    Zodd nodded in agreement, his gaze focused on the bubbling mixture. "A good way to make use of what we have," he grunted, his appetite whetted by the promise of a warm meal.

    Meanwhile, Brother Hemlock rummaged through their provisions, producing a few additional ingredients to enhance the flavor. "A pinch of herbs and a dash of spice should do the trick," he suggested, his culinary skills coming to the forefront as he seasoned the pot with care.

    Jean val Jean offered a nod of approval, his attention drawn to the simmering concoction. "Smells delicious," he remarked, a hint of anticipation in his voice as he waited for the soup to finish cooking.

    As the aroma of pumpkin soup wafted through the camp, the party gathered around the fire, their spirits lifted by the prospect of a hot meal. With bowls in hand, they savored each spoonful, their exhaustion momentarily forgotten as they indulged in the simple pleasure of shared sustenance.

    Despite the trials they had faced, there was a sense of camaraderie in the air, a bond forged through adversity and strengthened by the warmth of friendship. And as they ate and laughed together beneath the stars, they knew that whatever challenges awaited them on their journey, they would face them united, as a team.

     

     

    As the party gathered around the pot of pumpkin soup, Dougle couldn't resist a playful jab at their defeated adversaries.

    "Well, looks like these pumpkins finally met their match," he quipped, a mischievous twinkle in his eye as he ladled out servings for everyone.

    Jean val Jean chuckled, nodding in agreement. "Who knew pumpkins could be so feisty?" he mused, his tone tinged with amusement as he accepted his bowl.

    Zodd, ever the pragmatist, added with a smirk, "Guess they weren't ready for a taste of their own medicine," earning a round of laughter from the group.

    Even Mortel, usually stoic in battle, couldn't help but join in. "Well, they certainly made for a smashing defeat," she remarked dryly, a smirk playing at the corners of her lips as she took a sip of soup.

     

    The evening air was filled with a sense of camaraderie as Brother Hemlock ladled out servings of stew into bowls, offering one to each member of the party. "Here you go, my friend," he said warmly, handing a bowl to Jaws, who eagerly accepted it with a grateful chirp.

    The party gathered around, sharing a meal of pumpkin stew. Jaws, the once-menacing dinosaur, now sat calmly among them, munching contentedly on his portion.

    Jean val Jean grinned as he watched the dino enjoy his meal. "Who would've thought we'd be sharing dinner with a dinosaur tonight?" he remarked, his eyes twinkling with amusement.

    The deep, rumbling roar of the dinosaur echoed through the air, a sound that seemed to reverberate with contentment. Brother Hemlock offered a gentle smile, finding solace in the creature's simple display of satisfaction.

    Brother Hemlock, "I feel a liking for him. The dino is big and sluggish, but there's an honesty to beasts like him that's refreshing."

     

    Jean val Jean: "Did anyone else notice those two men in the distance? Brown cloaks, dodgy demeanor. They disappeared before we could get a good look at them. Spies, perhaps?"

    Dougle: "Could be. Keep an eye out. They might be working for Granny's crew or have some other nefarious business."

    Rosamund: "We'll need to stay vigilant. There could be more trouble lurking in the shadows."

    Brother Hemlock: "Indeed. Let's not drop our guard just yet."

     

    As they enjoyed their meal, the lighthearted banter served as a welcome reprieve from the intensity of battle, reminding them that even in the face of danger, there was always room for a bit of levity. And so, amidst the laughter and camaraderie, they savored each spoonful of soup, savoring not only the taste of victory but the bonds that held them together as friends and allies.

    Caerbannog approached the group, returning from scouting the area, his fur slightly ruffled from the night breeze.

    Caerbannog: "Ah, pumpkin soup, my favorite! He sniffed the soup and took a sip. “smells delicious! Did I miss anything exciting while I was away?"

    Brother Hemlock: "Just a bit of a scuffle with some unsavory characters. But nothing we couldn't handle."

    Jean val Jean: "Yeah, just the usual chaos, Caerbannog. We had our hands full with Granny and her gang."

    Caerbannog chuckled, digging into his bowl of soup. "Well, I'm glad to see everyone's still in one piece. Let's hope the rest of the night stays this calm."

     

     


    Chapter 5, Smoke rises up - 24.05.2024


    After their meal was finished, Jean val Jean's sharp eyes caught sight of the black bird once more, sitting ominously on the outer walls of the dimly lighted graveyard.

    "Hey, there it is again," Jean val Jean muttered, pointing towards the bird.

    Dougle turned to look, but the bird had vanished. "It's gone," he said, his voice edged with frustration. An eerie screech echoed in the distance, sending a shiver down the spines of the party.

    Zodd looked up the hill over the walls of the graveyard and noticed smoke rising in the distance. "That smoke doesn't look right," he said, narrowing his eyes. "Something's going on up there."

    Jean val Jean stepped closer, his gaze following Zodd's. "We planned to check out Emerson in the graveyard anyway. We better go now, while it's still night."


    Brother Hemlock and Caerbannog remained behind with the captured individuals, the loot, and the dinosaur, surveying the area and ensuring their position was secure. They carefully explored the immediate surroundings, checking for any signs of additional threats or hidden dangers.

    Jean val Jean, Dougle and Zodd gathered their gear and moved towards the graveyard, their steps deliberate and cautious. The large barred iron doors of the graveyard loomed ahead, casting long shadows in the flickering torchlight that lined the walls. The air was thick with tension as they approached the entrance, ready for whatever awaited them on the other side.

    As they reached the doors, Jean val Jean took a deep breath. "Stay alert, everyone. We don't know what we're walking into."


    They proceeded towards the imposing iron gate of the graveyard. The gate stood tall and foreboding, its heavy black iron bars locked tightly against intruders. Torches lined the walls, casting flickering shadows across the path and adding an eerie atmosphere to the night.

    Dougle looked past the sturdy black iron bars of the gate and saw the smoke coming from the back of the graveyard behind the stone mausoleum in the distance. "We'll need to find a way to open this."

    Jean val Jean scrutinized the gate cautiously, examining it for any signs of traps or mechanisms. "Looks sturdy," he commented, running his hand along the cold iron bars.

    But then he had an idea. Jean val Jean took out a spade and started to ram against the lock, using the spade to forcefully open the iron chains around the graveyard fence. He gritted his teeth as he swung the spade at the chain lock on the graveyard's main fence door. The metal clanged with each strike, but the lock held firm. Sweat trickled down his forehead as he tried again, and again, each attempt only denting the spade and leaving the chain unscathed.

    After several more futile attempts becoming more exhausted, Zodd stepped forward. "Let me try," he said, hefting his great axe with ease.

    Jean val Jean stepped back, nodding. "Be my guest."

    Zodd nodded, his muscles tensed with anticipation. "Let's see how much force that door can hold," he suggested, seeing that the wall to jump on was too high.

    With a single, powerful swing, Zodd brought his axe down on the chain. The force of the blow shattered the lock, sending fragments flying.

    Jean val Jean chuckled, shaking his head. "Well, that's one way to open it!"

    Dougle, standing ready, pushed open the now-unlocked door. "Let's go," he said, leading the way into the graveyard.


    The night was quiet, save for the occasional rustle of leaves and the distant hoot of an owl. The moon cast an eerie glow over the tombstones as the party made their way up the chiseled path.

    Together, the three adventurers began to search the perimeter of the graveyard, looking for clues or alternative entrances that would grant them access to whatever secrets lay within. The night was still and tense, filled with the anticipation of what they might uncover in the darkness beyond the locked gate.

    Jean val Jean, ever watchful, kept an eye on their surroundings, his crossbow ready in case of any unexpected threats. "Keep an ear out for any movement," he cautioned, his voice low.

    As they approached the main building, a surprised servant stepped out from behind a large, ornate tombstone. His eyes widened in alarm when he saw the intruders.

    "What are you doing here in the middle of the night?" the servant stammered, clearly taken aback by the unexpected visitors.

    Dougle stepped forward, his expression stern. "Where is Emerson?" he demanded.

    The servant, still shocked, pointed towards the building. "Eh....he...he's inside," he said nervously.

    Without hesitation, Zodd ran towards the building, his heavy footsteps echoing in the night. In the meanwhile, Jean val Jean moved swiftly, grabbing the servant and dragging him into the bushes nearby. The servant struggled saying "hey, what! Let me go! I haven't done nothing, I am just tending the garden", but Jean val Jean's grip was firm. With quick, efficient movements, he tied the servant up, making sure the knots were secure. Also he mouthcuffed him.

    "Shhh....stay quiet!" Jean val Jean whispered, his tone leaving no room for argument. The servant nodded fearfully, his eyes wide with fear.

    Jean val Jean rejoined Dougle, and together they made their way to the building where Zodd was already waiting.


    Zodd, with his powerful build and agility, approached the stone building and began his climb. His fingers found purchase on the weathered stone, and he heaved himself upwards with practiced ease. The night air was cool against his skin, the scent of smoke growing stronger as he ascended.

    Dougle and Jean val Jean watched from below, their eyes tracking Zodd's progress.

    "Be careful up there," Dougle called out, his voice barely above a whisper.

    Zodd grunted in acknowledgment, his focus on the climb. Reaching the top, he hauled himself onto the roof and stood up, surveying the scene. The building's back section was in ruins, a gaping hole where part of the structure had collapsed. Smoke billowed from the rubble, lit by an unseen fire within.

    Zodd crouched low, peering over the edge to get a better look. "The back wall's collapsed" he called down softly. "Smoke's coming from inside. Looks like there's been some kind of explosion or attack."

    Dougle and Jean val Jean exchanged a glance, the gravity of the situation sinking in.

    "Think you can get a closer look?" Jean val Jean asked, his tone cautious.

    Zodd nodded, making his way carefully along the roof's edge towards the hole. He moved with the silent grace of a predator, eyes scanning for any sign of movement below. As he reached the collapsed section, he peered into the darkness, trying to make out what lay within.

    Below, Dougle and Jean val Jean waited, tense and ready for anything. The silence stretched on, broken only by the distant crackling of the fire. Finally, Zodd's voice drifted down to them.

    "It looks bad," he said grimly. "Part of the building's completely caved in. There's debris everywhere...and I think I see bodies."

    Dougle's jaw tightened. "Can you see if Emerson is among them?"

    Zodd squinted into the smoke-filled darkness, trying to make out details. "Can't tell from here," he admitted. "But it looks like there's a way down. I'm going in!"

    "Be careful," Jean val Jean repeated, his tone urgent.

    With a final nod, Zodd began his descent into the ruins, disappearing from view. Dougle and Jean val Jean moved closer, ready to follow if needed. The night seemed to close in around them, the weight of the unknown pressing down heavily.


    As Zodd disappeared into the ruins, Dougle and Jean val Jean heard a commotion in the distance. The smoke had not gone unnoticed, even in the middle of the night, and townspeople were making their way towards the graveyard, their voices a growing cacophony of concern and curiosity. Among them, a group of guards sprinted up the hill, their armor clinking in the night.

    The leader of the guards, a stern-looking man with a weathered face, stepped forward towards a somewhat surprised Dougle and Jean val Jean. "I'm Corporal Dan, working for Sergeant Jake. We came to check this out," he announced, his voice authoritative.

    As Jean val Jean and Dougle encountered Corporal Dan near the graveyard's entrance, Dan's eyes narrowed the two suspiciously. "What business do you have here in the middle of the night?" he demanded, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword.

    Dougle quickly produced the letter bearing the sigil of Rothan Blackshield. "We're here to investigate the recent murders," he explained, holding the letter out for Dan to see. "We have the support of Captain Siegfried."

    Dan took the letter, examining the sigil and reading its contents. His expression softened slightly, though the suspicion didn't completely fade from his eyes. "Alright," he said gruffly, "but we'll handle this."

    As Dan returned the letter, Dougle quickly responded, "We haven't found the suspicious graveyard owner Emerson yet, nor that black bird. But something's definitely off here!"

    Corporal Dan nodded, his expression grim. "Emerson is suspicious but is not on the wanted list. Still, we'll investigate because multiple people have reported smoke coming up from the graveyard, and now we see the entrance door being bashed in!".

    Dougle hesitated, glancing nervously at the breached graveyard entrance door. He managed to position himself in such a way that it obscured Dan's view of the damaged door. Luckily, Dan seemed more focused on the task at hand and didn't interrogate them further about how they had entered the graveyard.

    "Soldiers, spread out and check the perimeter. Mages and priests, assist with anything unusual you find!", Dan ordered his men. He quickly added, "Let's move". They began spreading out to investigate. Dougle and Jean val Jean exchanged a relieved glance, grateful that they had avoided a potentially difficult question.

    "We'll find Emerson and that black bird," Dougle said, his resolve firm.

    Jean val Jean nodded. "And figure out what's really going on here."


    The squad of soldiers and the robed figures moved into action, spreading out around the building. The air was filled with the rustling of armor and the soft chanting of spells as the mages and priests cast spells to detect magical presence and other things, their eyes almost seem to be glowing with a faint light.

    Jean val Jean approached Corporal Dan. "We need to find out what's causing the smoke. My companion Zodd is inside, checking the collapsed section. We could use some backup."

    Corporal Dan gestured to two of his men. "You two, go and scout around the building. The rest, proceed as instructed and stay alert."

    The guards carefully made their way towards the building's rear, the smoke thickening as they approached. The heat from the fire was palpable, and the flickering light cast eerie shadows on the gravestones and mausoleum. As they investigated and felt the stone walls which were clearly damaged, they could not find find any direct way in.


    The smoke they had seen earlier now seemed more ominous, adding to the sense of urgency that hung in the air.

    Dougle asked: "we need to get in there to investigate as soon as possible. Emerson could be escaping and that bird seems to have flown in here somewhere also."

    Corporal Dan said determinedly, "Yeah, we need to find a way to open the door. The door is sturdy, but it's also old. With some combined effort we should be pulling it off". Doublas nodded in agreement.

    The guards, led by Corporal Dan, approached the mausoleum door with a sense of urgency. With a coordinated effort, they began to hit the heavy wooden door. The sound of their weapons striking the wood echoed through the night, mingling with the distant sounds of the alerted townspeople.

    Seeing this strategy didn't entirely work, they reverted to pushing in the door by force. They began to bash in the door and put all their might and strength in it to get it open.

    Finally, the door gave way with a resounding crack, splintering inward. The door to the building creaked open, revealing a dimly lit interior that seemed to beckon them in. The hallway went into three directions, to the left, right and straight ahead. The guards rushed inside, their torches casting flickering light over the cold stone interior. In the distance they saw rows of large stone ovens, their dark, yawning mouths hinting at their grim purpose. Along the walls, holes in the stone held wooden chests, each containing the remains of the departed.

    Corporal Dan signaled for his squad to move cautiously. "Keep your eyes open," he ordered, his voice low and tense.

    The group decided to go straight ahead. Inside the mausoleum, Dougle, Jean val Jean, together with the guards carefully navigated the dimly lit hallways, their footsteps echoing off the stone walls. They passed by the ovens and the wooden chests. Navigating the narrow aisles, their footsteps were echoing off the stone walls. They noticed another reddish-black door at the back of the mausoleum, slightly ajar. The group came to a halt before this door.


    Inside the ruins, Zodd covered his mouth as soon as he entered. He was navigating through the debris, his keen eyes searching for any sign of Emerson or the black bird. He stepped over fallen beams and piles of rubble, his muscles tensed for any sudden movement. The air was thick with the acrid smell of smoke and burnt wood.

    Zodd was exploring, his keen eyes scanning the dimly lit area. The room beyond was cluttered with various tools and equipment, suggesting it was used for maintenance or storage.

    As Zodd ventured further into the mausoleum, the thick smoke began to take its toll on him. The acrid, choking fumes filled the air, making it difficult to see and even harder to breathe. His eyes watered and his throat burned with every breath. He stumbled slightly, coughing violently as the smoke invaded his lungs. Each step felt heavier than the last as his head spun with dizziness. Determined to press on, he leaned against the cold stone wall for support, trying to clear his vision and focus through the suffocating haze. Despite his formidable strength, the oppressive smoke was proving to be a formidable foe, testing his endurance and resolve.


    The air was thick with anticipation as they examined the door at the end of the passage. Its surface was marred with scratches and dents, as if it had withstood countless attempts to breach it before.

    Dougle and Jean val Jean paused and tried to yell through the door. "Zodd, can you hear us?" Jean val Jean called out, his voice echoing in the hollow ruins.

    "Yeah, I'm here," came a faint and muffled reply of Zodd. "I found a way through..., but it's tight. I have to watch my step. And Emerson is not here!". He then coughed loudly.

    Jean val Jean quipped, "Looks like this door has seen better days. Let's give it a proper send-off."

    Dougle remarked, "Finally. Let's see what Emerson's been hiding."

    Dougle and Jean val Jean exchanged a knowing glance, while Dan's guards readied themselves for the task ahead. With a unified effort, they began to bash the door with their weapons, the sound of metal on wood resounding through the mausoleum. The door held firm at first, groaning under the relentless assault. Each strike was met with a shower of splinters until finally, with a resounding crack, the door gave way, swinging open to reveal the unknown depths beyond.

    The group carefully entered the door, picking their way through the debris. The guards stayed close, their weapons at the ready. As they moved deeper, the sound of shifting rubble and the crackle of flames grew louder.

    Dougle spotted movement ahead and raised his hand to signal a halt. "There," he whispered, pointing towards a shadowy figure emerging from the smoke.

    It was Zodd, running quickly towards them, almost crashing into the group. He was covered in soot and coughing loudly. "Found a few bodies," he reported dizzily. "But no sign of Emerson or that bird."

    Corporal Dan, who had followed them into the ruins, nodded to his men. "Guards, let's split up. We can't let anyone escape."

    The groups of soldiers, priests and mages divided, each group carefully moving through the ruins, their senses on high alert. The smoke swirled around them, obscuring their vision and adding to the tension.


    Dougle and Jean val Jean were relieved to see Zodd stumbling out, visibly affected by the smoke and fumes. His eyes were red and watering, and his breaths came in harsh, rasping gasps. Dougle quickly moved to support Zodd, while Jean val Jean took his other side. Together, they helped him navigate through the smoky corridor, moving as fast as they could without further compromising his health.

    "Zodd, finally!" Dougle urged, his voice laced with concern. "We'll get you outside immedeately."

    Jean val Jean added, "That was a brave move, but next time, let's avoid the chimney route."

    Once outside, the fresh air was a stark contrast to the oppressive smoke inside. Zodd's coughing slowly subsided as he took deep breaths, the dizziness beginning to fade. Dougle and Jean val Jean exchanged relieved glances, grateful that their companion was still alive. It had been a risky maneuver to enter through the roof of the mausoleum, and although they hadn't found Emerson, they were glad Zodd had made it through without severe harm.

    As they were recovering outside, the sound of the townspeople outside grew louder, a constant reminder of the urgency of their task.
